GJSD Announces ‘ABCD’ Award Winners

The Greater Johnstown School District (GJSD) has announced the first recipients of a districtwide ‘ABCD’ recognition award program. The award, which stands for Above and Beyond the Call of Duty, recognizes those individuals who have impacted the district through volunteerism, community involvement and educational support services.

“We applaud those individuals that provide their time, professionalism and service to our school district and greater community,” said GJSD Interim Superintendent Karen Geelan. “They exemplify what our district stands for and where we want our community to move forward. This is a proud community and we are fortunate to recognize those individuals who make our region stronger.”

Award winners will receive the ‘ABCD’ award certificate which represents the positive efforts of candidates within the school district. In addition, candidates stories will also be shared on the district website and through social media. Candidates will also be presented with commemorative pin.

The inaugural winners were recognized for their positive endeavors within the district. The recipients were also noted for the following activities as part of the ‘ABCD’ awards:

Knox Junior High School

Mrs. Bruno is recognized for her important work as Knox Student Council Advisor. In her role, Mrs. Bruno facilitates all student government projects and initiatives on the students’ behalf.  These include spirit week, the school store, food drives and the May Dance, to name a few. She assists with McDonald’s night fundraisers, attends modified sporting events to support her students, and manages student council concessions during modified basketball games. Mrs. Bruno goes above and beyond for her students and the school district. She’s a special team member who gives her best to our district every day. In addition to those activities, Mrs. Bruno was noted for her organization of community-based walking tours that highlight the historical aspects of our community, while sharing the importance of civic duty to GJSD students.

Ms. Swartwout has been recognized for her overall approach to bringing positive energy and knowledge to her position at the Warren Street School. Staff and students appreciate her willingness to help others, whether it’s for technology assistance for a colleague or extra tutoring for a student. Her efforts are recognized and appreciated throughout the district. She is a consummate professional who is respected and loved by her students.
