College Prep: Comprehensive

The Design

The College Preparatory Comprehensive Roadmap is designed for students who are interested in pursuing a career path that requires a college education. Graduates of the comprehensive program at JHS will be accepted into competitive four-year colleges. Graduates will pursue a variety of possible college majors while enrolled full-time.

While at JHS

Students will pursue the Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation. They will take specific electives in Spanish, advanced mathematics, advanced sciences and advanced humanities.

Students in the comprehensive program will take at least 4 years of math and science in preparation for college. High school courses may begin in grade 8, allowing the opportunity for students to earn additional credits. In the junior and senior years, many courses will be at the advanced or college level, either through AP (Advanced Placement), UHS (University in the High School) or CHS (College in the High School) programs. As a comprehensive program, these courses will represent all four core subject areas.

Characteristics

While all students are unique, the following may prove helpful in determining the choice of the College Preparatory Comprehensive program:

  • You flourish in the school environment, and love being academically challenged.
  • You are interested in attending college full-time.
  • You perform well academically in all of your courses.
  • You are achievement-oriented.

Profile of students

Lucas wants to become a NASA engineer. He has been reading about how to join NASA, and believes that admission into a competitive college will make the difference. His dream college is M.I.T. Lucas makes every effort to excel in and outside of school. He is conscientious of his grades, is the president of the advanced robotics club, a class officer and is a regular volunteer with the
Red Cross. On his own time, Student A has been prepping for his SAT’s through an online class. He is pursuing early acceptance to college and has already decided upon other schools if he is unable to get into M.I.T.

Beth has always enjoyed school. There was never a subject that she didn’t like. Throughout middle school and high school, Beth has been organized, and has gotten excellent grades. She takes time to complete her homework, prepare for assignments and study
for quizzes and tests. Beth likes taking challenging courses and started earning high school credits when she was in 8th grade. She isn’t sure what she wants to do for the rest of her life. She has thought about becoming an attorney or maybe even a pharmacist. Either way, Beth knows that going to college is part of her plan. The idea of learning a variety of subjects and challenging her thinking is exciting! She has been busy applying for multiple scholarships, and has her eye on a few competitive colleges that she would love to attend.
