Career & Technical Program

The Design

The Career & Technical Program Roadmap is designed for students who are interested in pursuing gainful employment in a particular field or attending college in a related field before seeking employment.

Students in CTC (Career & Technical Center) programs will be enrolled in a two-year, half-day program at the HFM BOCES Career & Technical Center while, at the same time, being enrolled in high school. Career programs are available in the following fields: Auto Body Repair, Auto Technology, Careers in Education, Cybersecurity & Computer Technology, Cosmetology, Criminal Justice, Culinary Arts, Digital Multimedia, Engineering Technology, Environmental Conservation, Foundations of Food Services, Medical Assisting, Veterinary and Animal Science.

While at JHS

Students will pursue either their Regents Diploma or their Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation. They will take a variety of courses that will meet high school degree requirements and electives that align to their chosen career field of study. Most elective credits during the junior and senior years are taken as part of the CTC program they choose. Certain core subjects, like math or English, are integrated into the CTC program for partial credit. Other general high school courses are taken in more traditional classroom environments.

CTC programs are aligned to industry standards and many graduates earn an industry certification or Career & Technical endorsement. CTC students complete an internship in their career pathway. Students gain real workplace experience and, when they graduate, are prepared for their entry into career employment, or for additional college study in their field.

Characteristics

While all students are unique, the following may prove helpful in determining the choice of the Career & Technical program:

  • You are interested in pursuing a career in the CTC fields identified above.
  • You want to gain experience before deciding if you want to go to college or if you want to start your career.
  • You want to learn through real-life experiences, projects and internships.
  • You enjoy coming up with creative solutions and leading your own learning.
