Welcome Back to the 2018-19 School Year

Dear Johnstown High School Families,

Welcome back to the 2018-19 school year.  I hope that you have had an enjoyable summer! Administration, teachers, and staff have worked very hard to prepare for the 2018-2019 school year and are very excited to open the doors on Wednesday, September 5th.  The majority of construction is done and I am excited for you to see our fantastic, new building.

The school day starts at 7:45AM, but the doors will be open for students at 7:00AM.  The last assigned class of the day ends at 2:30PM, but 2:30PM to 2:50PM is time used for academic enhancement. This time can be very essential for student success.

Understanding school expectations and policies is important for a successful experience at JHS. Important information such as attendance policy and academic eligibility can be found on under the Johnstown High School tab in the JHS student handbook. Other critical information can be found there as well. Please become familiar with the district website.

Just a reminder that the traffic pattern from last year will remain the same.  Families who drive their children to school will use the front loop off Pearl Street. Our buses will use the bus loop in the back of the school to drop students off. They will enter through the doors by the auditorium. This provides a much safer environment for all of our students, staff, and community members at arrival and dismissal time!

In closing, I am very excited to get the school year started.  I look forward to seeing all of you. Open House will be on October 16th, but if you have any concerns prior to that, feel free to contact me at any time.

Sincerely yours,

Scott M. Hale

Glebe Dismissal Procedure 2018-19

All you need to know about Glebe’s Dismissal!
Here’s to a safe 2018-2019!

  • Please keep in mind that each school has different dismissal
procedures because the busses and shuttles travel to each
school at different times. For example, at Glebe, the busses and
shuttles need to leave by 3:15 to get to PA and Warren. Therefore,
bus and shuttle students are dismissed first at 3:10 p.m. at Glebe.
  • Walkers and students getting picked up are dismissed at 3:15. You
will hear the announcement outside. The third graders will be
dismissed from the front main doors and the second graders will
be dismissed from the side parking lot door. You WILL need to get
out of your car and come to the door. Pick up is not drive-thru.
Pick up students are matched at the door. If there is a custody
situation and you would like your child signed out each day from
the office, please contact Mrs. North as soon as possible at
  • If you need to pick your child up before 3:15 p.m., you will need to
send a note and sign them out early from the vestibule window.
For the safety of all students, please do NOT come to the door,
ring the bell, and ask to sign out your child after we have already
started dismissal procedures. At this point, supervisors are in
place, students are in dismissal lines, etc.
  • If you need to make a change to your child’s dismissal, please call
the office at 518-762-3714 or send in a note. Please make all
dismissal changes BEFORE 1 p.m. If you do NOT send in a note or if
you make a change after 1 p.m., you will need to come inside and
sign your child out from the vestibule window.

Status of Athletic Fields

As the new school year approaches, we are beginning to enjoy fall athletic practices and games. At the same time, our capital building project is starting to wind down.

In order that our schools can open their doors on September 5, ready for students, many of our buildings & grounds crew members are busy assisting the district’s custodial staff with cleaning, moving furniture, and evaluating safety in each of our buildings. This is no small feat when we have to work alongside and around construction crews.

We do anticipate that, once school starts, our buildings & grounds staff will return to their important work on our fields. In the meantime, you may notice that our game fields, while prepared for play, are being kept at a moderate standard.

In addition, as a cost savings, the district is not ordering porta-potties for most games. Restrooms nearest to the fields will be unlocked. From time to time, if a golf cart is available with district staff to drive it, people with mobility issues may be transported to nearby restrooms during the games.

The patience and assistance everyone has provided in terms of practicing in alternate locations and traveling to alternate sites for athletic contests these past few years is much appreciated. We thank you for your understanding as we make adjustments while construction work continues. Soon our athletic fields, gymnasiums and pool will be looking their very best!
