The Greater Johnstown School District will once again open its doors this winter, for community members who would like to walk in a safe, indoor environment at Warren Street Elementary or use the district’s indoor swimming pool at Johnstown High School.

GJSD’s Community Walking Program will take place from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays beginning Tuesday, Nov. 28 at Warren Street Elementary School (110 Warren St, Johnstown, NY 12095). All community members are welcome. Participants must sign in and out at the main entrance of the building.

Johnstown’s Community Swim Program will take place from 9-11 a.m. on Saturdays, beginning Saturday, Dec. 2. The district’s Olympic size pool is located at Johnstown High School (1 Sir Bills Circle, Johnstown, NY 12095). Participants should park near the tennis courts and use the rear entrance by the bus circle.

“We are thrilled to once again be able to open our amazing facilities to Johnstown community members this winter,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. William Crankshaw said. “After taking a bit of a hiatus during COVID, we feel that it is important to have these health programs available so that community members of all ages will have the opportunity to stay active this winter in a safe and supervised setting.”

For the swimming program, children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult who is 18 or older. Toddlers must wear protective swimming diapers in the pool. Participants are allowed to bring personal swimming aides (devices intended to help you stay afloat and swim). Pool floats are prohibited.

Both the walking and swimming programs will run while school is in session. When staff and students are on break, the walking and swimming programs will not operate. Winter break will take place December 22 through January 1; February break is February 19 – 23; Spring break is April 1-5.

If the District closes because of inclement weather, the walking and swimming programs will also be canceled. Cancellations will be communicated through ParentSquare and the District’s Facebook page.
