District to launch school-based telemedicine program with Albany Med

Knox Middle School will begin a pilot program offering on-site telehealth services to registered students starting March 3

Dear Greater Johnstown School District Families,

The District is partnering with Albany Med Health System EmUrgentCare to provide accessible, high-quality healthcare directly to our students without leaving the school premises. A pilot program will be launched at Knox Middle School during the first week of March, and if it proves successful, we plan to extend this initiative to our high school and elementary schools.

Knox Middle School will receive specialized diagnostic equipment that will enable Albany Med providers to perform more thorough exams virtually in the school nurse’s office. This includes the ability to examine the ears, nose, and throat, which will lead to more precise diagnoses and customized care plans. You can be confident that these visits will be safe and secure. Parents and guardians are welcome to join the telemedicine visit remotely and participate in the appointment, giving you the opportunity to stay involved in your child’s care.

Register before March 3 launch for ease of access

The District is tentatively scheduled to begin this initiative at Knox Middle School on Tuesday, Mar. 3.  Students will have access to full-service telemedicine visits from the school nurse’s office if they are registered. We encourage Knox families to register now, so that if a student falls ill, everything will be set up to run smoothly for them. Registration must be complete for your child to be eligible to receive care through the program during the school day. Here’s the link to register online.

With your consent, the nurse can connect your child with an urgent care provider in real time to evaluate and treat a variety of minor health concerns.

Common conditions that can be evaluated via telehealth

  • sore throat, ear pain, pink eye/general eye complaints
  • concussion, headache, nausea, vomiting, upset stomach, menstrual cramps
  • fever, cold symptoms, asthma flare-ups
  • seasonal allergies, sinus infections, upper respiratory infections
  • dental pain
  • cuts and wounds evaluations
  • skin rash, impetigo, scabies
  • prescription refills
  • triage consultation

Able to treat students with or without insurance

Services are billed through your child’s health insurance. If your child does not have insurance, we are committed to ensuring access and will work with your family through the Albany Med Health System’s Financial Assistance Program.

We’re excited to bring this innovative model of care to support the health and well-being of our students.

Sincerely,
Alicia D. Koster
