DID YOU KNOW… The Greater Johnstown School District is home to a museum that preserves Johnstown history and memorabilia dating all the way back to the 1700s!
Located in the historic “White House” behind Knox Middle School, the museum is operated by dedicated volunteers who welcome visitors and offer guided tours. Admission is free, and tours can be scheduled by calling or texting Jane Sitterly at (518) 774-6671.
The museum officially opened in May 2003 after the Johnstown Board of Education adopted a resolution earlier that year appointing William Pollak as its first curator. Since then, it has grown into a remarkable collection celebrating the district’s rich history and traditions.
In recent years, volunteers have thoughtfully organized the museum’s rooms to showcase different eras of Johnstown history, creating a chronological journey that makes it easy for visitors to explore the district’s past.

At the end of this last school year, members of the Greater Johnstown Board of Education, along with Superintendent Alicia Koster and Assistant Superintendent Scott Hale, were invited to tour the museum. Their guides for the visit were three Knox Middle School students and longtime volunteer Jane Sitterly, whose knowledge and enthusiasm brought the exhibits to life.
Former Board of Education President Dave D’Amore, a proud Johnstown graduate, added a personal touch to the experience by sharing memories from his days as a Sir Bill. One of the tour’s most memorable moments came when Mrs. Sitterly displayed a vintage silk-screened “Knox Knights” logo. Mr. D’Amore smiled and proudly told the group, “I created that!”

Visitors to the museum can explore exhibits featuring Mrs. Rose Knox, browse a collection of yearbooks dating back to 1925, view alumni class lists beginning in 1881, see vintage athletic uniforms, and discover countless other artifacts that tell the story of the Greater Johnstown School District and its community.
Whether you’re a lifelong resident, a proud alumnus, or simply interested in local history, the Johnstown School District Museum offers a fascinating glimpse into the people and events that have shaped our community.
