Principal Snow: preparing JHS students not just for graduation, but for life

Just three months into his new role as Principal of Johnstown High School, Mr. Nick Snow has already made a strong impression through his work ethic, enthusiasm, and deep commitment to student success. It’s evident that he loves working with young people and is dedicated to helping them thrive—both in school and beyond.
“My passion for working with people, especially students, inspired me to pursue a career in education. Although I thoroughly enjoyed my time as a classroom teacher, I felt a strong desire to make a broader impact by stepping into a role where I could support a wider range of students and help create meaningful opportunities for their success,” said Principal Snow.
Building a positive and inclusive school culture
As the building leader for students in grades 8-12, Principal Snow envisions a future that is both ambitious and collaborative. He plans to expand the school’s academic programming and extracurricular offerings to create an environment where students are motivated and inspired to learn and actively engage. By working closely with department chairs and the Student Advisory Board, he collects innovative ideas to improve the student experience, ensuring the school grows in line with the needs of its community.
Principal Snow actively encourages students to explore new interests, try something new and step outside their comfort zones. “One thing we tell our students is to join a new club or try a new sport. When students are engaged in extracurriculars, they better understand the community around them, develop confidence and charisma, and discover new passions along the way,” he said.
As part of his mission to transform the school into a more vibrant and welcoming community, he has also launched fun initiatives like a senior lounge and personalized parking spots for seniors—ideas that have been well received by both staff and students.

Prioritizing Academic Excellence and Personal Well-Being
At the heart of Principal Snow’s mission at JHS is a genuine commitment to supporting the whole student—balancing academic excellence with mental and emotional well-being. He works closely with the District’s SEAL team (Social Emotional Academic Learning)—a dedicated group of counselors, social workers, and a psychologist—who play a vital role in prioritizing students’ well-being. Together, Principal Snow and the SEAL team ensure that every student receives the guidance and support needed to thrive.
“Our students’ progress is closely monitored. When a student begins to fall behind, we bring the team together to provide them with support and create a pathway that helps them reach their full potential,” he said.
“We’re fortunate to be part of a district small enough that we can truly know every student by name—know their story, their family, and the challenges they may be facing outside of school that may serve as a distraction to their academics. Our staff excels at building meaningful connections that help students flourish,” he added.

Preparing Students for the Next Chapter
With new requirements from NYSED’s “Portrait of a Graduate” initiative on the horizon, Principal Snow emphasizes the importance of connecting students to the broader Johnstown community and local businesses. These partnerships provide real-world experiences that help prepare students for life after high school and ensure that district programs align with evolving workforce needs.
“At the high school level, our ultimate goal is to prepare every student for their next chapter—whether that means college, trade school, military service, starting a career, or entering the workforce,” Snow said. “That journey looks different for every student, but our team is here to provide guidance, support, and encouragement, helping each student discover their strengths, overcome challenges, and reach their fullest potential.”
“Mr. Snow has brought tremendous energy, vision, and heart to Johnstown High School,” said Superintendent Alicia D. Koster. “In just a short time, he has made a meaningful impact—building strong relationships with students and staff, fostering an inclusive and supportive school culture, and setting high expectations for learning and personal growth. His focus on providing every student with the tools to flourish long after graduation reflects our district’s mission to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and abilities they need to be contributing citizens in a stronger society.”
Under Principal Snow’s leadership, Johnstown High School is poised to continue its growth as a regional model of educational excellence and innovation—where every student is given the tools and support they need to succeed. His vision is clear: to prepare students not just for graduation, but for life.
