Work has been completed on a new multi-purpose outdoor instructional area at Johnstown High School, featuring three new pickleball courts and refurbished basketball courts. This upgrade is part of the capital improvement project approved by voters in November 2022, which replaces outdated courts that had become worn and deteriorated.
The upgraded space serves as an outdoor instructional area for P.E. classes and other activities for students at both Warren Street Elementary School and Johnstown High School. It is also open to the public when school is not in session.
“Much like our indoor pool at JHS, the bridle walking path at Knox Field, and indoor walking at Warren Street during the winter months, we’re thrilled to make these new pickleball and basketball courts available to the greater Johnstown community,” said Superintendent of Schools Alicia D. Koster.
The public is welcome to use the courts whenever school is not in session, from dawn to dusk. The District is currently exploring the possibility of utilizing outdoor lighting to allow for use after sunset.
Students at JHS are currently using the new pickleball courts for an entire unit on the increasingly popular paddle sport during P.E. class.
“We introduced a pickleball unit at the high school several years ago, but now that we have dedicated pickleball courts, students are really enjoying the experience,” said JHS P.E. teacher Katie McCumber. “Pickleball has experienced a surge in popularity over the last decade, providing a fun way for people of all ages to stay active. Much like golf, hiking, swimming, cycling, and bowling, pickleball is a lifetime sport—something these young students can enjoy for many years to come.”
