A legacy of learning and joy

How one family’s tradition inspires young readers

In the Greater Johnstown School District, a cherished tradition takes place each year, connecting three generations of the Faville family with the bright-eyed students of Warren Street and Pleasant Avenue elementary schools. Jamie Tallon, daughter of the late Everett “Cubby” Faville, along with her daughter Makenna, son Travis, and mother Mary Jo Faville, has committed to a cause dear to them—celebrating the gift of books in Cubby’s memory.

The Cubby Faville Memorial Fund orchestrates a magical event where Johnstown High School students become the bringers of joy, handing out brand new books to every child in both schools. These teenagers, with their enthusiasm and kindness, serve as role models, inspiring excitement for reading. The fund was established in 2014 and honors the enduring legacy of Cubby, a beloved teacher and local hero known for his passion for education and sports.

Funded by an annual golf tournament, this heartwarming “Santa Project” fills the classrooms with a buzz of excitement, as children eagerly select books, each one a gateway to an adventure. Through this effort, the spirit of Cubby Faville lives on, reminding everyone of the power of stories to unite the community.
