JHS Thrifts open after school or by appointment
Special hours this week: open Tuesday and Thursday
Who doesn’t love a good bargain hunt? And what’s better than scoring a deal? Scoring it for free, of course! This year, the high school’s thrift haven is set to deliver some exciting offerings. JHS Thrifts is an expansion from a project National Honor Society (NHS) students started last year.

Last month, students began organizing their shop in a larger space (Room A 109), and here’s an exclusive sneak peek inside. The collection includes charming dresses, men’s and women’s clothing and shoes, along with seasonal items that are perfect for the frigid weather we’ve been experiencing, such as winter coats, hats, gloves, mittens, and scarves. You can dive into the “funky finds” bin and might discover a gem you never knew you needed! There’s a restroom conveniently located down the hall to try things on for size.
JHS Thrifts will be open two days a week after school. A regular schedule has not been set yet, but for this week, it will be open on Tuesday, Feb. 3, and Thursday, Feb. 5. Students can also schedule an appointment to “go shopping” by stopping by the main office or reaching out to NHS advisor Jen Sweeney.
Attention families and community members: feel free to donate those barely-worn, youth-friendly clothes in all sizes. Students would very much appreciate your generosity to keep the closet stocked and the students coming back for more. You can make your donation by contacting Mrs. Sweeney at jsweeney@johnstownschools.org.
This is starting with free clothing, but they eventually would like to offer other items like toiletries and school supplies to ensure that all students have access to essential resources. The vision is to create a supportive community space where students can feel comfortable and confident in their attire, while also having the tools they need for academic success.
In addition to the practical benefits, this initiative fosters a sense of community and collaboration. “Students involved in the organization and management of the shop gain valuable experience in teamwork and leadership. Plus, the positive environmental impact of recycling clothing rather than buying new aligns with our commitment to sustainability,” Ms. Sweeney said.
The NHS volunteers encourage everyone to participate in this wonderful venture, whether by donating items, volunteering time, or simply spreading the word. Together, it is possible to make sure that every student at JHS feels supported and stylish.
