Student-run ‘Grounds of Kindness’ teaches math, social skills, and more
In Mrs. Merritt’s class at Warren Street Elementary, Friday mornings overflow with additional kindness, learning, and laughter. The student-operated coffee cart, aptly titled “Grounds of Kindness,” serves as a bustling hub of activity where lessons extend beyond traditional textbooks.
“We had another coffee cart run today, and we’ll continue this on the next two Fridays of this month. The funds we raise go right back into the classroom to support special projects and materials,” said Mrs. Merritt. “We also use some of the money to help fund community experiences and incentives that keep our students motivated and engaged.”
The cart is a treasure trove of learning opportunities for the students who run it. They take orders from teachers and practice essential math and business skills—adding, subtracting, and making change. Each transaction is a real-world math problem. These tasks build their confidence and independence, teaching them to take pride in their work and attention to detail.
Social skills flourish as they greet teachers and staff with a cheerful “Good morning, special delivery,” while engaging in polite conversations. This helps the students develop positive interactions and interpersonal skills. They learn the power of a smile and a kind word, discovering that these simple gestures can brighten someone’s day.
Writing skills are woven into this project, too. Students craft thank-you cards for teachers, expressing their gratitude in complete sentences with careful thought. Each card shows their growing ability to communicate effectively and appreciate the people around them.
Beyond the practical skills, “Grounds of Kindness” cultivates a deeper sense of community within the school. It is a place where students feel a sense of ownership and belonging. The cart is a symbol of unity, showing that learning can be as much about building relationships and character as it is about academic achievement.
