Vision & Mission of the Greater Johnstown School District

The District will be a regional model school district of educational excellence for all students. The Greater Johnstown School District will provide the essential educational resources that support a fully engaged culture of continuous improvement and diverse, high-quality academic opportunities that equip students with the knowledge, skills and abilities they need to be contributing citizens in a stronger society.

Community

Johnstown is a small industrial town of approximately 8,500 residents located at the foot of the Adirondack Mountains. It is five miles north of the NYS Thruway (Exit 28), midway between Albany and Utica. The social and economic character of the community is diversified. The main industries are small manufacturing, farming and tourism. Johnstown is a historic town where visitors can relive colonial times wiht visits to the baronial estte of Sir William Johnson, the Fulton County Courthouse and other historical landmarks. Residents and visitors have many recreational opportunities available to them throughout the year. The activities include tennis, golf, swimming, softball, jogging, skiing, bicycling, fishing and hunting. The school system enjoys a fine scholastic and athletic program.

School

Johnstown High School is a comprehensive public school. Johnstown offers a wide variety of programs for its students with opportunities to choose courses from twelve different departments. JHS Offers a wide variety of extra-curricular activities and interscholastic athletics. The school is run on a day 1/2 schedule where core classes meet daily for forty-two minutes, with the exception of science labs and physical education, which meet every other day. The emphasis of the high school program is on preparing students for post-secondary study. The school id accredited by the NYS Education Department.

Cumulative Average and Rank

JHS utilized a numerical grading system based on a 100 point scale. The student’s GPA is calculated by the mean of all courses attempted, passed and/or failed.
Class rank is determined by a weighted, cumulative numerical average of each student’s final course averages from grade nine through the third quarter of senior year. All college and AP classes are weighted at 2% of the final course grade for rank. All other classes are weighted equally with the exception of physical education, which counts 1/4 of the final course grade.
