Congratulations to Johnstown’s varsity and junior varsity Winterguard teams, who both earned first place in the annual Artistry in Motion Home Show on Saturday, March 12. Hosted in the Johnstown High School gym, it was a standing room only event, with an overflowing crowd on hand to take in the pageantry of competition by 15 guard troupes and exhibition performances by the High Performance Dance Team and the Mohonasen High School Drum Line.
Winter guard is the competitive sport of indoor color guard. Modern color guard is a combination of the use of flags, sabers, mock rifles and other equipment, as well as dance and other interpretive movement set to music.
“Amethyst Gold,” Johnstown’s varsity guard, is currently ranked tenth in the world on the World Guard International’s (WGI) ranking list. Their show this year is titled “Metamorphosis” and explores the transformation of those who find the determination to become empowered after being bullied. Members include Haylee VanValkenburgh, Casey VanValkenburgh, Breanna Beekman, Mallory DeFrancis, Tatyana Rosario, Mackenzie McSpirit, Sheyenne Cook, Hannah Putman, Alyssa Bevington, Lindsay Blackwell and Caylee Fregin.
The junior varsity guard, “Amethyst,” is currently undefeated in circuit competition in the IRA class. Their show this year is “Through the Forest” performed to the soundtrack “Free” by Ryn Weaver. Members of the troupe include Robin Sears, Makayla Byrum, Domonique Rosario, Kaylee Clark, Hailey Brockert, Samantha Biamonte, Tyler Kretser, Elizabeth Festa, Eve Woods, Hannah Richardson, Autumn Kurtz, Brooke Nellis, Cassondra Loveless, Emma Richardson, Hope Cozzolino, Kaidince Nellis, Kamri Aherns, Kole Troutmen, Loryn Blahe, Megan Hamm, and Rhiannon Smith.
Johnstown’s Winterguard teams are guided by Director Christine VanValkenburgh and Assistant Director Travis Munson. The guards are members of the Mid-York Color Guard Circuit and also compete in Winter Guard International (WGI) Regional competitions.
Johnstown’s remaining season schedule is as follows:
- Varsity guard will travel to New Jersey’s Monmouth University March 18-20 to compete in the Eastern States WGI Regional Championship.
- The junior varsity and varsity teams will both compete in MYCGC NYS Championships at North Syracuse Jr. High School April 2-3.
- Varsity will compete in the NECGC State Championships at SUNY Brockport.
- Varsity will travel to Dayton, OH for the WGI World Championships April 5-10.
