Congratulations to Johnstown’s varsity winter guard, “Amethyst Gold,” on winning the gold medal at the 2017 New York State Mid-York Color Guard Circuit Championships held at Shenendehowa High School in Clifton Park on Saturday evening, April 1. They took first place in all five Scholastic A judging categories with a score of 91.08.
The team also received the prestigious George Cowburn “Espirit De Corps” memorial Sportsmanship award. This award is presented to one of 52 NYS teams in memory George Cowburn, remembered as an outstanding judge and drill instructor for band, drum corps and winter guard. It is voted on by the NYS Federation of Contest Judges and awarded for showing dedication to the activity, willingness to assist other guards in the circuit, good sportsmanship, honor and integrity.
Congratulations also go out to Johnstown senior Casey VanValkenburgh, who was awarded a $500 MYCGC Scholarship as part of the championship events.
Johnstown’s junior varsity Winter Guard team won the bronze medal in the Independent Regional A Class and finished their third undefeated season in a row for circuit show wins. JV guard members include Hope Cozzolino, Alexis Smith, Kaylee Clark, Emily Dingman, Mercedes Allen, Middle Row: Katelynn Cozzolino, Aria Sarr, Megan Hamm, Emma Richardson, Mikenzee Wroble, Emma Smith, Robin Sear, Domonique Rosario and Alera Sarr.
Under the direction of Christine VanValkenburgh, the varsity guard will next compete against 130 Scholastic A teams at WGI’s World Championships in Dayton, Ohio, on April 6 & 7. Varsity guard members include Michele Hamm, Alyssa Bevington, Breanna Beekman, Casey VanValkenburgh, Tatyanna Rosario, Mackenzie McSpirit, Makayla Byrum, Hannah Putman, Hannah Richardson, Sheyenne Cook, Rhiannon Smith, Lindsay Blackwell, Tyler Kretser, Mike Simone, Mallory DeFrancis, Eve Woods and Elizabeth Festa.
