The Greater Johnstown High School’s 2017 Amethyst Gold Varsity winterguard team took first place at the WGI Trumbull Connecticut Regional this past Saturday, February 4, at Trumbull High School. Their powerful and inspiring show titled “Summit,” reminds us that everybody dies but not everybody lives, so reach for your dreams. The varsity team is now ranked number 2 in the nation on the Scholastic A Winter Guard International standings list!

Johnstown’s JV winter guard team, Amethyst, has won all three of their competitions in the IRA training class, competeting at Phoenix, New Hartford and Shenendehowa high schools. Their show, titled “Home,” is about knowing that, wherever life takes you, you can always go home.

Both teams will be traveling to Laurens High School on February 18; Johnstown’s “Artistry in Motion” home show competition will be held at JHS  at 4 p.m. on March 4; the two teams will then travel to Central Square High School on March 11; and on April 1, they compete in the MYCGC NYS Championships at Shenendehowa High School East, Clifton Park, NY.

The varsity team will compete at WGI’s South Brunswick NJ Regional on February 25, and on March 18 & 19 in WGI’s Eastern States Power Regional Championship at Bethlehem PA. They will then go on to compete against 130 Scholastic A teams at WGI’s World Championships in Dayton, Ohio on April 6 & 7.

Johnstown’s Winterguard Director is Christine VanValkenburgh; Assistant Director Shaun Edwards; and staff members Scout Brink, Travis Munson, Taylor Blakely, Brian Schidzick, Haylee VanValkenburgh and Marissa Gordon. Show design and equipment work is by Brian Giddens and dance chreographer Alissa Lazero. The teams are supported by the Johnstown Music Support Group in addition to the Greater Johnstown School District.
