On Sunday, May 9th, three members of the Johnstown Field Hockey team, Chelsea Rodecker, Emily Fleming and Taryn Ringer, participated in USA Field Hockey’s Futures Regional Tournament held at Syracuse University. Established in 1990, the Futures program is an effort to continually raise the level of field hockey in the United States by developing athletes for future consideration to the U.S. National Teams. Rodecker, Fleming and Ringer trained at their Futures site, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, from January through May. While at RPI they received elite-level training, with some of the top coaches in the country, to improve their skills and develop a tactical understanding of the game.
At the conclusion of the training, each of nine regions across the country conduct a Regional Futures Tournament. New York, Region 4, held their tournament at Syracuse University. Rodecker, Fleming and Ringer are now waiting to hear if they have been selected to their respective Regional Teams for the U14 and U19 National Futures Championships which will be held at the end of June in Pennsylvania. If selected to play in National Futures Championship, Rodecker, Fleming and Ringer will have the opportunity to be selected to various other elite programs, including the U.S. Junior National Teams.
