Presenters from the Francis Young Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs visited Glebe this week. Students learned about the abstract work of Alma Thomas and then created their own abstract works of art. Alma Woodsey Thomas (1891-1978) was Howard University’s first fine arts graduate in 1924. After retiring from a career as an art teacher in a Washington, D.C. junior high school, she developed her signature style of abstracts filled with irregular patterns and bright colors. Her first major exhibit took place at the age of 75.
