Approximately 50 veterans, together with their family members, accepted an invitation extended by Pleasant Avenue students and staff for a special recognition breakfast held at school on Wednesday, November 8.
The program consisted of a welcome; introduction of all veterans present; the Pledge of Allegiance; singing of “The Star Spangled Banner;” “America,” and “America, the Beautiful,” accompanied by grade 1 teacher Mrs. Christina Sitts on the piano. In addition, Board of Education President Kathy Dougherty, as guest master of ceremonies, read a brief history of Veterans’ Day. Mr. Doug Dougherty spoke regarding the history of the playing of “Taps” at military funerals and performed the piece for those in attendance.
Students made cards, crafts and banners for veterans ranging in age from 95 – 20, representing veterans of World War II to current members of the military. Mrs. Karen Toscano’s class also made thank you bags filled with cookies that were handed out to the veterans. Mrs. Toscano spoke about why she feels it is important for her students to learn about Veterans’ Day.
Decorations were provided by Mrs. Nancy Spencer, with the assistance of other Pleasant Avenue staff, and veterans were offered the opportunity to have their photos taken with family members in front of a wall-sized replica of the American flag.
