In Johnstown’s second year of competing in the Odyssey of the Mind enrichment program, three out of eight teams will be advancing to the state finals.
After a long and exciting day of competition in Canajoharie on Saturday, sixth graders on the Naselli team (who refer to themselves as the Energetic Engineers) placed first in their problem. This will be the team’s second trip to Binghamton University; they finished fifth in the whole state last year.
Usually only a region’s first place team in each problem and age group advance. Unexpectedly, there were a handful of wild card seats handed out to a few second place teams as well. This means that the sixth grade Elston team and the fourth grade Vandewalker team will also be making the trip to state finals on April 8th.
The fifth grade Kortz team also placed second after building a required balsa wood structure that held almost 100 pounds.
All Johnstown teams did a spectacular job preparing for this competition. Their sportsmanship and effort should be commended! Special thanks goes out to the parent coaches of all the teams at Warren Street and Knox. Without their guidance and supervision, this program would not be possible.
