JHS Principal Michael Beatty Retiring June 30
Johnstown High School Principal Michael Beatty will retire end of day June 30, 2015, capping off a 38 year career as an educator and administrator.
A 1972 graduate of Johnstown High School, Mr. Beatty earned a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education, with a minor in U.S. History, from St. Joseph’s College in Rensselaer, Indiana. He later earned a Master of Science degree in social studies through SUNY Albany, and Education Administration Certification from the College of St. Rose.
After several years as a junior high social studies teacher for the North White School Corporation in Monon, Indiana, Mr. Beatty spent a year teaching social studies in the Broadalbin Central School District before accepting a position as a social studies teacher at Johnstown in 1981. During his time at JHS he also served as summer school principal from 1995 – 2001 and as assistant principal from 1998-2002, culminating in his appointment as Principal in 2002. Along the way Mr. Beatty also coached football, track and wrestling; was the social studies department chairman; a class advisor; and an adult education instructor.
We wish Mr. Beatty a long and happy retirement as he concludes 33 years as a dedicated educator and administrator in the Greater Johnstown School District. His cowboy boots will be sorely missed in the halls at JHS!
Mr. Scott Hale Appointed JHS Principal Effective July 1
Mr. Scott Hale has been appointed by the Board of Education to undertake the position of Principal at Johnstown High School effective July 1, 2015.
A 1996 graduate of Johnstown High School, Mr. Hale earned a Bachelor’s degree in physical education from SUNY Cortland, a Master’s degree from the University of New England and a Certificate of Advanced Study as School Building Leader from the College of St. Rose.
Following twelve years as a physical education teacher in Johnstown, Mr. Hale became Assistant Principal at JHS on September 30, 2013. He previously led the boys’ basketball program as varsity head coach for ten seasons, was a long-time assistant football coach, and spent time as a boys’ modified soccer coach, boys’ junior varsity lacrosse coach, and summer recreation supervisor. Mr. Hale has worked closely with Mr. Beatty and District Administration over the last two years and is well prepared to step into his new role as principal.
A Johnstown native, Mr. Hale resides in the Greater Johnstown School District with his wife and children.
Mrs. Corinne Cotter Appointed Assistant Principal Effective July 1
Mrs. Corinne Cotter has been appointed by the Board of Education to assume the duties of Assistant Principal at Johnstown High School effective July 1, 2015.
Also a 1996 graduate of Johnstown High School, Mrs. Cotter earned a Bachelor’s degree in social studies 7-12 at St. Lawrence University and her Master’s at SUNY Albany.
She has taught social studies at Johnstown High School for 13 years, served as a teacher mentor for five years and is currently the teacher mentor coordinator. She is also the co-chair of several of the District’s Professional Learning Committees (PLCs), including the District Literacy PLC, Social Studies Curriculum & Assessment PLC, and the Freshmen Experience PLC. In addition, Mrs. Cotter serves as JHS Student Council advisor, was a summer school tutor, a softball assistant and an alpine ski assistant. She will assume her new duties as assistant principal effective with the 2015-16 school year.
Mrs. Cotter and her family are long-time Greater Johnstown School District residents.
