Fourteen members of Johnstown’s varsity cross country team traveled to NYC to participate in the Manhattan College HS Invitational on October 8. The Manhattan Invitational is the third largest cross country meet in the U.S.A., held at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. It is a 2.5 mile course.
Leading the boys team, Brandon Mraz medaled with a time of 14:20, placing 58th out of 180 runners. The Sir Bills second runner, Alex Quillan finished with a time of 15:08 (117). Gabe Cole finished as a strong third runner for Johnstown with a time of 15:28 (128). Also running for the Sir Bills, Mike Simone 15:42 (138), Nate Cotton 15:50 (142), Zach Ropeter 16:02 (146) and Mark Cwiakala 16:29 (169).
The Sir Bills finished 22nd in the Varsity G race. Overall, the Sir Bills finished 183th out of 221 teams.
On the girls side, both Julia Sarullo and Aylene Newman medaled in the girls Varsity D race. Julia Sarulla lead the team with a time of 16:59 (42). Aylene ran a time of 17:21 (57). Also running for the Lady Bills, Julia Preston finished with a time of 18:08 (85), Casey VanValkenburgh 18:29 (100), Katie Romano 20:06 (142). Lyndsey Fiore 20:14 (148) and Lauryn Wilson 21:49 (164). There were a total of 180 runners in the girls race.
The Lady Bills finished 16th out of 26 in their respective race. Out of all 177 girls varsity teams, the Lady Bills finished 113th.
