Introduced at Johnstown High School during the 2014-15 school year, Captains Council is a student leadership program developed to promote school pride, sportsmanship, integrity and mentoring through athletics. The council also provides for communication between student athletes and school administration.
Council representatives are team captains from each sport at Johnstown and rotate each season (fall, winter, spring). The group meets at least once a month and is facilitated by Athletic Director Mr. James Robare and School Psychologist Dr. Michael Fraser. Discussions focus on expectations for team captains, how to improve school spirit and the students’ vision for the school district.
In a May 2015 school pride service project, members of the Captains Council offered to spruce up District grounds by painting 53 blue trash barrels in school colors of purple and gold. Paint and brushes for the project were generously donated by Mr. Paul Connelie and Benjamin Moore & Co.
Future projects currently slated to be undertaken by the Captains Council include assisting in running School Spirit Weeks, promoting the three sports seasons by developing a pep rally for each season and promoting additional student participation in sports.
