What an amazing week we had at Glebe Street Elementary! We kicked off our Accelerated Reader program, “Books Arrgh Awesome” by first recognizing the thirty-five students who participated in Johnstown Public Library’s summer reading program. The assembly followed with an introduction to the AR program at Glebe. Students will have an opportunity to read AR books and take quizzes- earning them points for pirate themed incentives.
The assembly was interrupted by a friendly pirate who wanted to know, “Arrgh you reading students”? Students assured our pirate friend that they would keep reading! Students have the opportunity to earn a carabineer clip, a pencil, various pirate/ocean themed charms, participation in Pirate Game Day, a Treasure Hunt, and a Trip to the Cove (JHS Pool) based on how many points they earn. Families and students are invited to AR Night in the Glebe Library on October 21st from 6:30-7:30 p.m. to read with a family member or friend and take an AR quiz.
Students also learned about the importance of vocabulary. The more words you know, the better you are able to understand the words you hear, the better your writing will be, and the easier it will be to understand what you read. Students will help Principal Abbey North teach their peers through a vocabulary word of the week program beginning the week of October 6th. Students arrgh excited to start reading!!
