GJSD Continued Learning at Home begins Wednesday, April 1
The Greater Johnstown School District continues to work to prepare students for their futures during these trying times. The COVID-19 pandemic and closure has encouraged us to find new and innovative ways to achieve the district mission. As we embark on this next phase of the closure, the Greater Johnstown School District is expanding instruction to include online learning via Google Classroom for students K-12 beginning April 1, 2020.
Beginning April 1, teachers will be posting weekly activities and assignments in Google Classroom. Students should check each teacher’s Google Classroom for weekly assignments and further direction from their teacher(s). While instruction will not be the same as in a traditional classroom, our faculty is committed to providing students with the best possible instruction given these unique circumstances.
Q1: How long will students be expected to be online each day?
A1: The learning materials that will be posted will follow NYSED guidelines for home-bound instruction. You will find that the hours of instruction will not require students to engage in online learning for a full academic day. The exact number of hours each day will vary depending on grade level and specific courses.
Q2: How will GJSD faculty be communicating with students?
A2: GJSD faculty will be connecting with students and families through email, Google Classroom, Google Meet (video conferencing), or by telephone.
Q3: Will students have the option to access paper packets?
A3: It depends on the grade level. See information below.
K-1: All students in Kindergarten and 1st grade will be provided with paper packets and workbooks to use while learning at home. Packets for K-1 students must be picked up in order to continue learning at home. K-1 packets will be available at the JHS Auditorium (JPAC) front entrance Wednesday, April 1- Friday, April 3 between 10:00AM and 12:00PM.
2-12: Instruction for students in grades 2-12 will be fully online. Students in grades 2-8 who require additional support and/or do not have access to the Internet or a computer at home will be able to pick up resources for at home learning. The district will be contacting these families specifically, with a schedule for pickup.
Q4: How do students access the online materials on Google Classroom?
A4: Google Classroom may be accessed by visiting classroom.google.com.
Username: email address (lunchnumber@johnstownschools.org)
Password: password they use to log into Chromebooks at school.
Once your child has successfully logged into Google Classroom the first time, he or she can also access Google Classroom by clicking on the Google Classroom icon in ClassLink, our app launchpad.
