The students at Pleasant Avenue Elementary and Warren Street Elementary spent time together recently writing Christmas cards for the residents of the Willing Helpers’ Home for Women. Last night they hand-delivered the cards and spent time with the residents, spreading holiday cheer.

Happy New Year! I hope you had the opportunity over vacation to spend time with friends and family! Most kids work best with a schedule- so it is great that we are back in the swing of things here at Glebe. We have a busy month planned! We invite parents and family members to join our monthly morning program on January 11th at 9:20. Glebe will host the January PTA meeting on January 9th at 6 p.m. The Glebe Leadership Team will meet on January 9th and our next AR Night is January 23rd from 6-7 p.m.
The Great Kindness Challenge is one week dedicated to creating a culture of kindness in schools nationwide. In 2018 Glebe was recognized as a Kindness Certified School. Our school is proudly participating in this proactive, positive-bullying prevention initiative. During the week of January 28th through February 1st, students will receive a Great Kindness Challenge checklist with a list of kind acts. Please encourage your child to complete the checklist and show the world that KINDNESS MATTERS!
My Resolution! Be on time for school! Don’t forget that students can go to their classrooms at 8:45 a.m. and the academic day begins at 9 a.m. Students arriving after 9 a.m. are considered tardy. During morning work, students get settled for the day and attend to school business. This sets the stage for the day ahead. When students arrive late, they start their day rushed and a few steps behind. They often interrupt instruction for their classmates who are already busy at work. We depend on the partnership of parents and caregivers to ensure that students arrive to school on time every day. If you need support or assistance in your efforts, please call us at 762-3714. We hope to see you soon at Glebe!

Message from the Principal
Wow, another year passing and a new one beginning! I don’t know about you but I am not good with New Year’s Resolutions.
There is a Chinese Proverb that says, “A JOURNEY OF A THOUSAND MILES MUST BEGIN WITH A SINGLE STEP.”
How true that is! We teach our students to set goals and reach to achieve them. My goal, my resolution, is to be more active. Of course, I downloaded Beachbody on Demand 2 months ago and pledged to get up earlier to work out. Have I done it, no! I guess I need to take that single step.
I urge you to enjoy time with your family and friends this holiday season and to set goals with your children. What will your journey look like? Do you need to work together to unplug more and connect as a family? Maybe it is getting to school on time or improving attendance? Does your child long for a solo at the concert?– set up a practice chart at home. Perhaps reading night-time stories for some quality time is what your child wants? Or improving that foul shot with a couple extra minutes at the gym after practice?
I do know that none of us will wish we had slept in more or watched more Netflix later when our little ones have grown up and left the house. A lesson I
So, what will your first small step be? Me– hopefully it will involve getting up when that alarm goes off, the first time!

We were excited to see so many of you at Parent-Teacher Conferences and at Accelerated Reader Night. It is important that you and your child’s teacher communicate so that together, you can help develop their pathway to success. When we see highly interested and involved parents, we see highly interested and involved students.
As always, we have a busy month planned here at Glebe! On December 7th we will kick off the holiday season with a winter sing-a-long in the afternoon. Students are invited to wear holiday colors. On December 14th at 9:20 we will have our monthly Morning Program. Our book fair will run December 10th-12th. You will receive a notice as to which day/time your child’s class will attend. We hope to see you at Santa’s Wonderland from 6-7:30 p.m. on December 11th. Come in your pj’s and have milk and cookies as Santa reads “The Polar Express.” After our story, students may have their picture taken with Santa and will have the opportunity to make three crafts that can be used as presents. The cost is $5 per student. There is no cost for parents to attend and siblings are welcome! Please return the RSVP form so we have enough materials for everyone. The book fair will also be open during Santa’s Wonderland on December 11th from 6-7:30 p.m.
A reminder, school is closed on December 24th-28th and December 31st-January 2nd. School resumes on Thursday, January 3rd. I hope that you enjoy the holiday season and have the opportunity to celebrate with family and friends. I am very grateful to work in such a wonderful school with dedicated teachers, staff, great students, and families. I wish you good health and continued happiness for 2019!
