The 2009-10 Accelerated Reader Program’s “Construction
Project” is well underway at Warren Street Elementary
school and will run until May 30, 2010. This year’s
theme was selected to reflect the “rebuilding” of Warren
Street Elementary, as it has experienced a surge of new
students following the re-structuring of Johnstown’s
elementary schools.
The addition of dozens of avid readers and additional
resources from surrounding schools promises to make this
year’s Accelerated Reading Program a memorable one.
We’ve also expanded the program to include the
Kindergarten classes, as new little readers join in.
Expecting to pass last year’s record of 18,000 scored AR
points, we are hoping to see the 20,000 mark by June 1,
2010. Competition is building among the classrooms for
highest number of points achieved; we’ve already totaled
1131 points throughout the school.
The new incentive goals have been delivered to the
classroom teachers and are posted at the school
entrance. A “Wall of Fame” is located across from the
library and will be updated monthly to showcase the top
three readers for each grade. These student’s names will
also be listed in the school’s monthly newsletter and on
the school Web site.
Every student at Warren Street is encouraged to
participate in the Accelerated Reading Program. If you
are unfamiliar with the procedure, ask your classroom
teacher or the librarian for help with the following:
-
Select an A.R. titled book from your classroom, the
school library, or the Johnstown Public Library. A
list of the current Accelerated Reader Program book
titles may be located on the Warren Street Web site,
or at the Johnstown Public Library.
-
Read the book on your own.
-
Use a computer in your classroom, or the library/lab
to take the AR quiz for the book you read. Be sure you
have logged into the computer program using your
correct ID.
Clicking on the school link Accelerated Reader
will provide the most current list of AR books/tests
available at Warren Street. It is anticipated that
several new titles will become available in the coming
weeks. The school’s AR list will be updated as these new
titles are added.
The first prizes are expected to be issued to students
before Christmas, and then at the beginning of each
month as goals are achieved. Good Luck, Good Reading,
and remember that “Reading is… the Foundation of
Learning.”
