Accelerated Reader has three easy steps to continuously help guide students to appropriate books within their zone of proximal
development:
- The student reads a library book or textbook series selection that is marked Accelerated Reader (AR).
(We currently offer 2259 AR quizzes here
at Pleasant Avenue).
- The student takes the AR quiz on their library book selection or popular reading textbook series.
(The quizzes provide assessment information to help the teacher motivate reading, monitor progress, and target instruction to accelerate reading
growth).
- The student takes their quiz home to share with their family and accumulates AR points for various prizes.
(This builds self-esteem, self-worth, and pride in an each and every
student).
Accelerated Reader helps students focus attention on the careful reading of books, which improves students’ critical-thinking skills and builds an intrinsic love of reading.
Books are numerically leveled and also color-coded by reading difficulty. Each book is labeled with a specific color-coded sticker and is worth a specific point value.
Pleasant Avenue Elementary Library Color Levels:
- Pink Sticker – levels 0.5 - 1.9
- Green Sticker – levels 2.0 – 2.9
- Blue Sticker – levels 3.0 – 3.9
- Yellow Sticker
– levels 4.0 – 4.9
- Orange Sticker – levels 5.0 – 5.9
- Purple Sticker – levels 6.0 & Up
Students receive AR points in direct correlation to the grade achieved on each test. Then a predetermined number for each grade is multiplied against the point value of the test to arrive at the number of points the student has earned.
- 1st & 2nd grade is multiplied by 5
- 3rd & 4th grade is multiplied by 4
- 5th & 6th grade is multiplied by 3
