 PARP 2008

PARP 2008
P
arents As Reading Partners

What do we do?
Read together – students with a favorite adult
Mom, Dad, Grandma, Grandfather, aunt, uncle, babysitter, older sister or brother

How often and how long?
At least 5 days a week for a minimum of 15 minutes each day.

How long does PARP last?
The PARP kick-off is Friday, March 14. You can begin reading and keeping track that day! Record slips are due EVERY THURSDAY by 3:00 (or before) and must be turned in to your child’s teacher. No LATE sheets will be accepted.

Why should we participate?
Reading is fun. You can help encourage the love of reading. Kids learn that words and reading are part of our everyday life. The more you read the more you know.

What’s our goal?
To instill the love of reading within each student and to achieve 100% school-wide participation!

What can we read?
ANYTHING!!!
Some ideas of things to read TOGETHER
Read the cereal box at breakfast time (5-10 mins.)
Read store and street signs while in the car (5-10 mins.)
Read the notices that come home in the book bag (5-10 mins.)
Read directions to a game (5-10 mins)
Read the comics together (15 mins)
Read the newspaper (Sunday has a kid’s section)
Read instructions on how to prepare a meal (5-10 mins)
Read a magazine article (5-15 mins)
Read a chapter book over the course of PARP a little at a time (15 mins)
Of course, there are always bedtime stories!

Five or ten minutes here and there can add up.
Simply spending these 15 minutes a day can spark a kid’s interest and love of reading.
Words and reading are everywhere, you don’t always have to sit down with a book.

What about my child who doesn’t like to read?
Remember this isn’t about their ability to read, but the time spent with an adult reading, so make it fun.
Let your child stay up an extra 15 minutes, if time is spent reading.
Don’t ask them to read. You read to them.
Have a snack while you read; snuggle up on the couch, make some hot chocolate and relax.
Let them use a flashlight and read in bed.
Remind them: if they want to go the Pleasant Ave. Carnival, they need to read and bring in their signed slip.

Last, but not least………
When the kids read with an adult at least 5 days a week and turn in the attached signed record slip, they receive prizes! If a child has participated and returned at least 3 signed record slips, he or she will get a ticket to our in-school Pleasant Avenue PARP Carnival.

Items on the PARP 2008 Calendar are optional, but also earn extra rewards if completed!

Bonus Prize
If every student turns in at least one signed slip on time, Mr. Blanchard will be required to dress up as a clown for a day.
