 Accelerated Reader Program

Accelerated Reader
Accelerated Reader (AR) is the world’s most popular reading management software. This program is an easy and effective way to monitor all forms of guided reading practice.

Download Jansen Avenue’s Accelerated Reader Book Lists

Accelerated Reader has three easy steps to participate and earn points:

  1. The student reads a library book that is marked Accelerated Reader (AR). Jansen currently has 1308 AR quizzes.
  2. The student takes the AR quiz on their library book selection. The quizzes provide assessment information to help the teacher motivate reading and monitor progress.
  3. The student turns in the quiz and accumulates points for various prizes. This builds their self-esteem, and pride in their work.

Extra Points Earn Extra Smiles
There were smiles all around on Thursday, November 15, when Jansen Accelerated Reader program leaders Mrs. Hastings and Mrs. Mowrey offered 50 Bonus Points to anyone who came out to read and take AR quizzes. The library and computer lab were packed and, you could hear the whispers of stories being shared by parent and child. Mrs. Sotero was delighted to see family members enjoy an evening reading together!

Don't Blow It - Keep Reading!
Jansen Avenue is continuing with the expanded Accelerated Reader program. The program will run from October 15, 2007 until March 20, 2008 and will again include a unit for kindergarteners. Mrs. Betsy Hastings, our teaching assistant, will be directing the program with the support of Renee Mowrey from the Shared Decision Making Team and the PTA.

A student begins by choosing a book from the Accelerated Reader collection in the school library. The student then reads the book at his/her own pace. Following completion of the book, the student takes a test on the computer.  Based on the difficulty of the book and how well the student does on the quiz, he or she is awarded points. We also consider the student's grade level in determining levels that are attainable for all students.

We have a special spot for our kindergarteners. Knowing these children are just learning to read, we want to encourage them to read with a family member. Each kindergartner will bring home a bubblegum machine with 10 gumballs. As you read stories together, write the title and author on the gumball. After all 10 are filled in, return the sheet to school and your child will earn 10 points. We will send another sheet home and so on. We will hang the bubblegum machines around our bulletin board.

Students can earn the following fun incentives along the way:
25 points           Bookmark, pencil/eraser
50 points           Squishy ball
75 points           Animal note pad
100 points         Jansen magnet
200 points         Reading bracelet
300 points         Book choice & Jansen pen
400 points         Read to Succeed Pin
500 points         Reading medal & lunch ordered in & a gift certificate for the June book fair

Also, remember to visit the Johnstown Public Library, they have a great children’s room and an awesome collection of books.  Books can take you to far away places!!!

We hope that everyone will get caught being an accelerated reader!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Note of Thanks
Thank you to all staff members, PTA members and the Shared Decision Making team - without your help, this program would not exist.
