Physical Education Leadership Award Winners
JHS students Karly Vdoviak and Jeff Roth were recognized as recipients of the NYS AHPERD Physical Education Leadership Award during a dinner at the Century House Restaurant in Latham on February 7. The Capital Zone of the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance offers this honor to recognize one female and one male student from each high school in the zone for their commitment to their education and health. Criteria for the award include a high level of physical performance, scholastic achievement, leadership qualities and service to the school and/or community. The students were accompanied by their parents, together with physical education teachers Mr. Scott Hale and Mrs. Jennifer O’Neil and athletic director Mr. James Robare.

JHS Junior Published in New York Times
Dylan Quinn, a junior at JHS, has bragging rights few others can claim: he is a published author in the prestigious New York Times. Dylan recently submitted his “Pet Peeve” assignment from Ms. Fagan's advanced composition class to the newspaper and it was accepted for publication. The piece, which appeared in the Sunday, January 10, edition of the Times, can also be viewed by following this link. Congratulations Dylan!

Scenes from a Winter Wonderland
On the evening of December 5, JHS students enjoyed the opportunity to dress up and dance the night away during the Winter Wonderland Dance held at St. Anthony's Hall as part of the International Club's Annual Exchange Weekend. See additional photos here.

Practicing Public Speaking Through Reading
On November 19, students from Mrs. Catucci’s fifth period English class at JHS made their way to Warren Street Elementary school with picture books in hand. Part of the purpose of the field trip was to develop an activity that focused on the speaking standard of the English Language Arts curriculum. Mrs. Catucci stated that “It is important for high school students to practice their speaking skills. This field trip allowed these 20 ninth graders to open up to speaking in front of a crowd. Since a lot of students feel anxiety when speaking in public, I thought this New York State standard would be best met while in front of a younger audience.” Click here to read more.

Class of 2010 "Sundaes with Santa" a Huge Success!
On Sunday, November 29, the JHS Class of 2010 hosted "Sundaes with Santa" at Immaculate Conception Hall. More than 150 children enjoyed being photographed with Santa, making a picture frame, decorating a cookie and making their own sundaes. Parents were asked to contribute a toy as their admission to the event and, by the end of the day, four large boxes had been filled! The Class of 2010 will be donating these items to the Toys for Tots Campaign. Thank you to the Class of 2010 parents and to Santa for your assistance; to everyone who attended; and especially to Mr. & Mrs. Kollar for their help in organizing this event! Congratulations also to the following five wind ensemble students for being selected to participate in the All-County Jazz Ensemble: Mike Gage, baritone saxophone; Alex Simon, piano/vibraphone; Matthew Miller, trumpet four; Ran Isei, trumpet one; and Sakura Isei, trombone one. A concert will be performed at Broadalbin Perth High School at 3 p.m. on February 6, 2010.

International Club Donates to the Community
On October 25, the International Club held its annual apple pie/pumpkin carving day. The carved pumpkins were given to the Fulton County Infirmary to use as decorations to help raise resident's spirits for Halloween. Extra apples and pumpkins were given to the Salvation Army. The club's donations came at just at the right time, as the organization was looking for pumpkins for families with children, who would have been otherwise unable to participate in traditional Halloween pumpkin carving.
