JHS Students Meet Mercury 13 Space Program Candidate Wally Funk
You probably know about the Mercury Seven, but are you familiar with the Mercury 13? On Friday, September 10, JHS students gathered in the auditorium to hear from guest speaker Mary Wallace "Wally" Funk, who was a member of the small group of top female aviators recruited in 1960 to undergo the same psychological and physical tests as the Mercury Seven astronauts.

Ms. Funk, an accomplished pilot and the first woman to become an investigator for the National Transportation Safety Board, talked about her experiences as a participant in the grueling tests developed as part of NASA's astronaut selection process, before the "Women in Space" research program was abruptly canceled in 1961.
