JHS Wind Ensemble to Perform at Carnegie Hall
In a once in a lifetime opportunity, the Johnstown High
School Wind Ensemble has been invited to perform a concert
in New York City’s famed Carnegie Hall. Planned as an
evening of concert band music by five select ensembles,
the event will take place at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, February
10, 2009, in Carnegie’s prestigious Isaac Stern Auditorium
on the Ronald O. Perelman Stage.
The JHS Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Mr. Daniel
L. Jones, is a select band comprised of 45 student
musicians, mostly juniors and seniors, with some advanced
freshmen and sophomores. Included in the Wind Ensemble’s
repertoire for the NYC audience will be Daniel Baldwin’s
“At the Foothills of the Adirondacks,” a piece the band
commissioned for the grand opening of the new Johnstown
High School Auditorium. Mr. Baldwin will be in attendance
as well that evening, surely making this memorable event
even more spectacular.
Carnegie Hall’s Isaac Stern Auditorium
/ Ronald O. Perelman Stage has been the premier classical
music performance space in the United States since its
opening in 1891, showcasing the world's greatest soloists,
conductors and ensembles. Throughout its century-plus
history, the space has been the forum for important jazz
events, historic lectures, noted educational forums and
much more. Originally designed by architect and cellist
William Burnett Tuthill and renovated in 1986, the
auditorium's striking curvilinear design allows the stage
to become a focal point embraced by five levels of
seating, accommodating as many as 2,804 people.
The hall was dedicated the Isaac Stern Auditorium in 1996
and the stage was dedicated the Ronald O. Perelman Stage
in 2006. The
auditorium's renowned acoustics have made it a favorite of
audiences and performers alike. The late Isaac Stern said,
"It has been said that the hall itself is an instrument.
It takes what you do and makes it larger than life."
In addition to the performance, the band members
will attend a Broadway matinee of Mel Brooks’ “Young
Frankenstein” on Wednesday and take in some of the sights
of Manhattan before returning home.
Tickets for the concert can be purchased from any band
member, or by calling the band office at 762-4661,
extension 416. Donations to help defray expenses related
to the trip will be most appreciated.
