2009/10 Tax Levy Impact
At its August 13, 2009 business meeting, the Board of
Education adopted a tax levy of $6,990,887 for the 2009/10
school year. There is no increase in the tax levy from the
2008/09 school year.
Due to significant changes in assessed total valuation in
Ephratah and in the equalization rate in Palatine, there
will be widely different impacts upon taxpayers. The
school district has nothing to do with either assessments
or equalization, it only sets the tax levy. Town assessors
set property values and the New York State Office of Real
Property Services sets the equalization rates. The same
tax levy will have differing impacts on each municipality
due to assessed total valuations and equalization rates.
The
STAR program with an enhanced exemption continues, along
with the senior citizen exemption. However, equalization
rates are also a factor in the STAR reductions, with a
parcel assessed at less than full value slated for less
than the full STAR exemption after the equalization rate
is applied.
