Student-Athlete of the Week Recognition
Criteria for
choosing a Student Athlete of the Week is determined by
the athlete's play, character, motivation and teamwork for
a specific week. Each sport is allotted one week during
the school year to choose two varsity players, giving
everyone an opportunity to excel.

Spring Athletes of the Week |
May
6 - May 11, 2013: Softball
Lexi Swatt - This past week Lexi went seven for
10 with a three run home run and a grand slam. Lexi had
a total of nine RBIs against Berne Knox in one game. For
the week, she had a batting average of 700. Lexi is a
captain on the softball team and continues to be a
leader on and off the field.
Alyssa Palmateer - This past week Alyssa led her
team on the mound pitching a 2 hiiter against Berne Knox
and went five for nine batting. She had a game career
high seven strike outs as well. |
April
29 - May 4, 2013: Track & Field
Eric Brower is a leader on and off the track, he
is always looking to improve himself in whatever ways he
can and has really stepped up this year into a role as a
key leader of our program. His hard work has really paid
off as an athlete and student and it does not go
unnoticed.
Ethan Cretser is always a positive individual; he
does everything in his power to ensure that members of
the team are happy while working with them to obtain
their goals. Ethan always goes the extra mile and will
do anything you ask of him; he is a great influence and
addition to our team.
Katie
Blair has really taken it upon herself to step up
this year, she is always there for anyone on the team
and will do whatever is asked of her. She has really
grown to be a vital part of our team and works extremely
hard to help everyone. Her hard work does not go
unnoticed
Courtney Cirillo does whatever is asked of her
with no complaining, ever. She often has to run the
longest and hardest event every single week and never
complains about the work that has to be done no matter
how time consuming or hard it may be. She is responsible
to do the work without being asked and does it to the
best of her ability. She is a great influence to all. |
April
22-27, 2013: Boys Lacrosse
Jeremy Mowrery - His hard work, leadership, and
character in practice spilled over in last week’s game
against Lansingburgh. Jeremy scored seven goals and one1 assist in and
exciting game. He is a true team leader.
Colin Dalmata - He is our defensive leader. This
past week his defense was faced with the task of playing
against Lansingburgh high powered offense.
Colin’s defense was up for the task with a strong
defensive effort. Colin’s defense shut out Lansingburg’s
leading scorer who also was the fifth leading scorer in
Section 2.
His determination and heart make him the athlete of the
week. |
April
15 - 20, 2013: Girls Lacrosse
Nakia Sweetman - As a starting defender, Nakia
created big turn-overs and plays that assisted our team
throughout this week. Nakia caused havoc for the other
teams as they attempted to get the ball into the
critical scoring area, but were denied because of her
aggressive and smart defensive plays. She was able to
pick up many loose ground balls and not only handle the
ball well offensively, but was able to get the ball into
our offensive players hands and created scoring
opportunities for our team. Many of her defensive plays
lead to possession of the ball and eventual scoring
plays.
Skylar Swatt - A starting offensive player, she
led the team in total goals scored and overall points
scored this week. In three games Sky had 7 goals and 3
assists. Skylar has really stepped up her on-field
presence, and made good decisions about when to pass off
the ball, when to take the shot and when to back up her
team when they made a play. She played aggressively
against some very good competition this week and has
been an overall solid player for the girls team.
Kendra
McCoy - As a starting Midfielder, Kendra had the
second highest goals scored, and total points scored
this week. Through 3 very difficult games, Kendra was
able to score 5 goals and have 2 assists, for 7 total
points. Her ability to read the field, see the open
players, pass the ball off when she can, and move very
quickly down field to take the shot has been a key to
keeping our team in contention in these game. Kendra was
a key communicator on the field and assisted her
teammates when running players or getting back on
defense.
Emma Heroth - As the starting center, the most
difficult position on the field, Emma not only lead the
team in ground ball pickups, her speed and ability to
weave through defenders made her a formidable opponent
this week against good competition. Emma also lead our
team in interceptions this week, with 6. She moved the
ball well, was aggressive on defense and never stopped
hustling. |

Winter Athletes of the Week |

February
4 - 8, 2013: Alpine and Cross Country Skiing
Kayla Groesbeck & Eric Brower (cross
country skiing) and Hannah Keener & Joel Levin
(alpine skiing) have done a great job exemplifying
student athletes. They have demonstrated scholarship,
leadership, responsibility and character among their
teammates and within their sport.

|
January
28 - February 1, 2013: Cheerleading
Cheerleading is one of Emily Colasani's passions
and it shows both on the court and off. She is a
talented cheerleader who is always willing and able to
step into any position as needed. This season she has
taken on a co-leadership role and has been doing a great
job.
This season is Cassidi Terranova's first as a
cheerleader. She has worked extremely hard to learn all
cheers and moves. Her height and willingness to learn
have made her a talented "back" and an integral part of
her stunt group. Cassidi is the type of athlete that any
coach would love to have on their team.
|
January
28 - February 1, 2013: Boys Basketball
Sophomore Jonathan Heroth is an extremely hard
worker in the gym, as well as in the classroom. He is a
great role model for all student-athletes. Jon leads the
Sir Bills in rebounds and in charges taken. He takes
pride in doing all of the little things to help his
team.
Freshman Jamal Vazquez has become very
comfortable on the floor. Jamal is leading the Sir Bills
in FT percentage and is second in scoring. He takes a
lot of pride in playing good defense and being the
hardest worker on the floor. Jamal is a very coachable
kid, who is always willing to learn. |
January
21-25, 2013: Boys Swimming
Aaron Alvarez works hard every day at practice
and never wastes time. He is a prime example of the old
saying “actions speak louder than words.” Aaron has a
goal of making sectionals in the 50 free and with his
work ethic, he should be successful!
Chris Dunbar has been putting in more effort to
achieve his goal of making sectionals in an individual
event. Through hard work, he achieved that goal by
qualifying for sectionals in the 100 Breaststroke at a
meet on January 16. |
January
14-18, 2013: Wrestling
Patrick Morrison, Joe Nellis, Anthony Mowrey and
Austin Brand have shown dedication on and off the
mat all year long and have been leading the way for the
wrestling team with results, dedication, loyalty and
leadership. |
January
7-11, 2013: Girls Basketball
Johnstown’s “Athletes of the Week” for Girls basketball
are Kelsi Barnholt and Courtney Cirillo. Both
students exemplify good character, leadership,
responsibility and scholarship while in school in our
community and on the athletic playing fields. Both are
Captains and great role models. Congratulations! |
December 10 - 14, 2012: Boys Bowling
Ben Empie has demonstrated great skill work and attitude
on the lanes in practices, as well in match play. Ben
contributed very well in the team's wins this week, with
his high game of 234 rolled against Broadalbin-Perth.
He has rolled one 600+ series so far this season and his
league average is 196. Ben's work ethic is very
instrumental in Johnstown's bowling success.
Congratulations Ben!
Jim Marshall has rolled three 600+ series and one 700+
series so far this season and was very instrumental in
winning the team's matches against Broadalbin-Perth and
Queensbury. His high single of 267 was rolled against
Queensbury, and his high series of 732 was rolled
against Broadalbin-Perth. Jim's ability to stay focused,
along with his athletic ability, are great attributes to
his success. Keep up the great work Jimmy -
congratulations! |
December
10 - 14, 2012: Girls Bowling
Alyssa Hadcock helped the Johnstown bowling team to
string two wins against Broadalbin-Perth and Queensbury.
She is very dedicated to doing her best during practice
sessions, as well as match play. Her high single game
bowled against Broadalbin-Perth was 223; she has rolled
one 600+ series so far this season; and her league
average is 171. Congratulations Alyssa and keep up the
great work!
Co-Captain Morgan Ruggeri has displayed tremendous skill
work on the lanes, with 12/12/12 being a special day
that will go down in history for for her. On that day,
Morgan rolled her first 300 game during the first game
of a match against Queensbury. She continued to roll six
more consecutive strikes in the second game, stringing
18 strikes in a row. Bowling is a sport that can play
games with your mind, but Morgan's fine work ethic and
athletic ability allow her to stay cool and calm; she is
always in a zone and stays focused, and her numbers
speak for themselves. Morgan rolled a high series of 779
against Queensbury, has rolled four 600+ series and two
700+ series, and her league average is 222.
Congratulations Morgan! |

Madison Smrtic, Hannah Breda, Meghan LeDoux, Kadisha
Vazquez, Annie Stock, Kaitlyn Duelser, Bri O'Rourke and
Alyssa Nellis.
Everyone on the team has contributed to the success we
have experienced this year. The chemistry they share
together is one of their greatest strengths. Together
they can take on any opponent. Good Luck in Sectionals! |
October 15
- 19, 2012: Girls Soccer
This week’s Athlete of the Week award is being presented
to the entire girls’ soccer team due to their
commitment, dedication, sacrifice, hard work, and for
their desire to improve the program. In a tough
Foothills Council, the team has taken a stand on
becoming a competitor and not an “easy win.” This desire
started in the off-season and has continued through the
entire season with the girls never giving up hope and
striving to be better every game and practice. The
entire team exemplifies good sportsmanship, character,
responsibility, and leadership both on and off the
field. The girls’ soccer team ends every practice with a
motivational quote, so it is only fitting to end this
team award with a quote:
Life's battles don't always go / To the stronger
or faster girl / But soon or late the girl who wins / Is
the girl WHO THINKS SHE CAN! Adapted from the poem “Thinking” by Walter D. Wintle
|
October 8 -
12, 2012: Boys Soccer
Jon Heroth never takes a play off. Every game or
practice it's 100% effort in all he does, regardless of
what we are doing and whether it's the hardest or
easiest drill.
Andy Cammara flat out keeps us in games - no
small task in the Foothills. He is our leader back there
and the quarterback who has to constantly direct traffic
and stay on his toes. There is a huge burden placed upon
being the goal keeper, but Andy does it without any
complaints and understands the sacrifice.
Both Jon and Andy are excellent role model citizens,
athletes, and, most importantly, students that our
younger kids can look up to. It is certainly a pleasure
to have them gracing our soccer fields everyday at JHS.
|
October 1 -
5, 2012: Field Hockey
Emma Heroth and Jenna Hohenforst are two Lady
Bills that couldn't be more Yin &Yang with each other.
While Emma is riling up the offense with her in your
face style of play, Jenna is calmly watching and waiting
on defense and assessing the precise moment to strike.
These two ladies are not sent onto the field to do
anything they do not put their whole hearts into. They
unconsciously put the team first, always giving more
than they take. Their passion and drive is not just an
intention, it’s a force which offers no excuses,
overcomes all odds, and comes through smiling in the
end. Not to mention that they possess the natural
traits, such as strength, agility, intellect and
endurance, that are necessary for the physical demands
of this sport. Simply put, these two athletes are the
definition of a true Lady Bill!
|
October 1 - 5, 2012: Girls Swimming
Erica Askew has consistently been one of the top
performers for the girls' varsity swim team. She is
currently undefeated in individual events, and is even
ranked first in Section II Division 2 for the 100 yard
breaststroke. She has become a team leader who is always
willing to help the younger swimmers develop their
technique and is a source of positive motivation for the
rest of the team.
Meghan Bartlett is currently the top ranked diver
for Section II. She posted another first place
performance against Amsterdam, breaking her own school
record with a score of 298.43. Meghan has once again
qualified for the State Diving Championships to be held
in Ithaca during November 2012.
|
September
24-28, 2012: Cheerleading
Rachelle Mitchell is an amazing athlete. Her
previous gymnastic and cheerleading experience makes her
a real asset to our team. She is always willing to give
any stunt a try!
Kaitlyn Bewley is in her second year as a varsity
cheerleader and is a great leader. She is always willing
to do what she can for the good of the team.
|
September
17-21, 2012: Cross Country
Alyssa Henry works hard to balance everything she
has going on in her life. While being an extraordinary
student, Alyssa also works hard to be a great athlete;
she works hard to improve herself, but more importantly
to improve the team. Her upbeat, positive attitude keeps
everybody motivated and smiling even on the hardest
days. She's always the first one to volunteer for any
activity and she is the go-to girl if you need help with
anything. Alyssa has really stepped up and taken an
active role in helping our program. She is a great
example to our younger athletes.
Eric Brower shows great promise and leadership
through his work in school and athletics. Always working
hard to improve in his sport and his academics, he
always finds a way to succeed at an outstanding level.
Eric has been dedicated to working hard and it shows
through his huge improvements and the achievements that
he has accomplished on the field. Eric is a great
example of how challenging your limits and applying
yourself bring you to the next level. He has stepped up
as a great addition and component to our varsity team.
|
September
17-21, 2012: Girls Tennis
Aubri Kranbuhl for her ability to pull out two
tough three-set victories.
First year player Alexis Berry for winning three
matches in a row.
|
September
10-14, 2012: Golf
Senior Co-Captains Josh Brown and Jerry Groom
have lead the Sir Bills to a 6-4 record, including
Monday night's team best 153 against Hudson Falls. Jerry
is the first sectional qualifier for the golf team, and
Josh has been low scorer in 5 of our 9 matches to date.
The boys experience as varsity players, and their easy
going personalities, have set the atmosphere for a very
satisfying and successful season. |
