Breakfast
Club is an Incentive for Warren Street Fourth Graders
Keeping up with homework has its benefits: Homemade
cinnamon rolls, hot cocoa and fruit, for example.
These tasty treats are part of an incentive program,
started by fourth grade teacher Nancy Lisicki. The
“Breakfast Club” is a reward for Lisicki’s students who
complete their homework for an entire month. Assignments
are tracked on a daily basis, and at the end of the
month, those students who have turned in all of their
assignments are recognized.
“Homework is an extension of the work done in school, so
practice at home is key,” said Lisicki. “We have found a
direct correlation among regular breakfast club
attendees and higher grades.”
The club started last year and is continuing to grow in
popularity among students. Approximately half of
Lisicki’s class has attended the Breakfast Club, and
some students have been attending since the beginning of
the school year.
“The Breakfast Club has made an impact on student
achievement in the classroom,” said Warren Street
Principal Anne Christiano. “You can feel it when you
walk into the classroom and see the students working.”
This year, parents are also invited to attend and be
recognized. “Parents are such an important component in
encouraging students to get their homework done,” said
Lisicki. “It’s nice to have positive recognition for
both students and their parents for what they are
doing.”
Aside from being recognized at the monthly breakfast
meetings, students are also honored in Warren Street’s
monthly newsletter and receive a certificate from
Christiano during Character Counts assemblies.
“The Breakfast Club is one example of how students
succeed when we bridge the gap between school and home,”
said Christiano. “Research shows that parent involvement
has a positive impact on student achievement and success
in school.”
"Ms. Lisicki's creativity in weaving the home/school
connection through a 'Breakfast Club' is inspiring.
Students are motivated and parents are involved...a sure
recipe for success," remarked Mrs. Katherine Sullivan,
Assistant Superintendent.
The Breakfast Club is held on a Thursday morning, once a
month from 8:30-8:45 a.m.
