Students Jump HurdlesThere was plenty of sun, smiling, cheering and physical activity at the annual elementary track meet held on Friday, June 1. Grades 4 - 6 from all four elementary schools and Wheelerville converged at Knox Field for the morning's event. Competitions included a 50m dash, 50m hurdles, a 200 m relay, a co-ed shuttle relay (grades 5-6), and a 400 medley relay, as well as a co-ed 200m relay (grade 6). The students also participated in the long jump (standing for grade 4 and running for grade 5 and 6). Grades 4 and 5 students participated in a softball throw while grade 6 students participated in the shot put and discus. The meet finished with a co-ed tug of war done by grade and class. The Grade 4 and 6 tug of wars ended with the 2 classes from Jansen participating in the finals against each other for the title.

The purpose of this event was to promote physical activity and the fun and challenge of individual competition, and to teach the value of good sportsmanship in being a gracious winner as well as an accepting loser. The track meet is an extension of the Physical Education program, and the students prepared for it in the weeks prior to the event with their PE teachers - Cyndi Cromer, Bob Kraemer, Jeremy Weber and Chuck Goebel. Although the instructors do not keep track of points for each school per se, ribbons are awarded to first, second and third place for each event. The children will receive these awards at their awards assemblies during the last week of school.
