The
Johnstown School District administrators have been
working together in taking a proactive approach to
ensure the safety and welfare of all district students,
in light of the recently reported incidents with
strangers in Johnstown. Arranging the “Safe and Secure
Personal Safety Program” is one way in which the
District is providing safety information for students
and parents.
Self-defense instructors Lt. Mark Gifford of the
Johnstown Police Department and Michael Campos of
Executive Defense Systems presented the “Safe and
Secure Personal Safety Program” to elementary students
in the district on Feb 5 and 6.
The presentations took place during the school day
and included information on safety at home and
outside of the home. Students learned general rules of
safety for both children and adults. In addition, they
were given strategies on how to avoid dangerous
situations and what to do if they are ever in an unsafe
situation.
The elementary presentations took place as an assembly
for grade 3-6 students in each building.
Students in grades K-2 will continue to receive safety
information through the police officer that presents the
DARE program in the elementary buildings. Presentations
for students in grades 7 and 8 will take place during
physical education classes, and the high school session
is being planned for a later date.
For further information on the program, or if you have
any questions, contact your building principal or the
Superintendent’s Office.
Pleasant
Avenue Raises Money and Does Doggone Good
School Reaches Goal and Then Some For "Canines For
Combat Vets"
Over
the past several months, Pleasant Avenue Elementary
School students, staff and parents—along with the help
of Kathy and Kellie’s La Barkery and community
members—raised over $600 for “Canines For Combat
Veterans,” a program that supplies “service” dogs to
veterans who have experienced debilitating leg injuries
while serving in a branch of the armed forces.
On Wednesday, February 28, the culmination of their
efforts were celebrated as the school welcomed Executive
Director of Canines for Disabled Kids, Kristin Law, and
her service dog, “Laddy,” for a special check
presentation ceremony. (Read
