Local
Assessments
Besides the various assessments mandated by New York
State, the Greater Johnstown School District administers
its own form of assessments throughout the school year.
Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening (PALS) —
(Begins May 1)
PALS is a screening assessment that measures student
development in reading in the early grades.
PALS assesses young children’s knowledge of several
important literacy fundamentals which are predictive of
future reading success.
Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS)
—
DIBELS is a series of brief measurements that accurately
predict reading outcomes, so that educators can identify
children at risk for reading failure, before they fail.
The DIBELS testing can determine the child’s
instructional needs, form ability-based groupings, and
intervene as early as kindergarten to ensure that
students read at garde level.
DIBELS also allows teachers to evaluate the
effectiveness of their instruction, as well as the
effectiveness of the program that’s being used in the
classroom.
Due to the increase in state testing in grades 3-8,
the previously administered Terra Nova testing will be
discontinued as of the 2005-06 school year.
