Enhancing Education Through Technology Stimulus Grant: Online Learning
The Greater Johnstown School District is pleased to announce that, by collaborating with another school district through the local HFM BOCES, Johnstown has received a three-tiered stimulus grant to enhance education through technology.

This three-tiered grant will allow students at Johnstown High School to receive online courses from NYS certified teachers for one year for remediation and acceleration. In addition, secondary Johnstown teachers will receive in-depth professional development in how to teach a fully online course, or how to teach a blended online course (a physical “live” class with online components or modules). It will also allow the district to evaluate the effectiveness of online instruction for JHS students and to plan for our own approach to online instruction in Johnstown.

Implementation will begin with the 2010-11 school year, during which time the program will launch and staff members will study and plan for online instruction. Johnstown teachers will then provide Johnstown
students with access to online courses in a blended or fully virtual environment in 2011-12.

Advantages of the program include allowing Johnstown students to graduate with online learning experience, making them better prepared for college; opening the doors to students who may need to repeat a course and need to learn in a different manner; and allowing Johnstown teachers to create virtual and blended classes that fit our students and our school district. Other possibilities include providing teachers a medium for creation of customized instruction to meet the needs of at risk and gifted students, by incorporating online instruction into their curriculum; and replicating the online learning component so that every year more Johnstown teachers learn how to teach in an online environment.
