Pleasant Ave celebrates Earth Week

Pleasant Ave celebrates Earth Week

Pleasant Avenue students had the opportunity to study nature through science kits on loan from Five Rivers Environmental Education Center. The kits covered many topics, including mammals and trees to name a few. Most of the kits included specimens along with other instructional material. Principal Michelle Gabree-Huba read the book “What a Wonderful World,” based on the Louis Armstrong song, to each class. During the month of April the vocabulary words of the week learned by students included reduce, reuse, recycle. Finally, students were encouraged to wear green on Friday to commemorate Earth Day.

Pre-K Night Focuses on Reading Fun

Pre-K Night Focuses on Reading Fun

Johnstown’s pre-school students, together with their families, enjoyed a special evening at Pleasant Avenue planned just for them on April 21.

The incoming kindergarten students listened to Principal Michelle Gabree-Huba read “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” by Eric Carle, and then completed crafts inspired by the book. They also enjoyed refreshments and an opportunity to visit Pleasant Avenue’s Spring Book Fair. Information about the 1000 Book Club at the Johnstown Public Library was offered as well. We hope to promote literacy to our youngest learners by sharing great books and making reading a pleasurable past time.

Successful Spring Food Drive at Pleasant

Successful Spring Food Drive at Pleasant

Pleasant Avenue held a very successful spring food drive, inspired by a note to Principal Mrs. Gabree-Huba from first grader Carly Smrtic, who wanted to save food for the homeless. Through Carly’s generous sentiment, several boxes of non-perishable food was collected and donated to the food pantry at St. John’s Church.

Poet Inspires Language & Composition Class

Poet Inspires Language & Composition Class

Mrs. Fagan’s AP Language and Composition Class was delighted to  listen to a reading by poet Joan Murray on Friday April 8, at the Johnstown Public Library. Murray has published five volumes of poetry, won the National Endowment for the Arts Poetry Fellowship and Pushcart Prizes, been the Writer in Residence at the state Writers’ Institute, and is a repeat guest on NPR’s Morning Edition. Following the reading, students wrote their own narrative poems.

Though it snowed and felt  more like February than April, the students truly enjoyed their walking field trip and are grateful for the great resources at the Johnstown Public Library.

Odyssey of the Mind State Competition

Odyssey of the Mind State Competition

Energetic Engineers group photo Brainiacs group photo

Two Odyssey of the Mind teams represented Johnstown at the state competition this past Saturday, held at Binghamton University. Both earned their spots by finishing first in their division at the regional competition last month.  The teams spent months creating an eight minute skit that they also performed for Warren Street School last Tuesday.  Students on the Odyssey teams come up with the ideas needed to solve a given problem, creating all their own props, scenery and costumes.  Odyssey of the Mind teaches students to learn creative problem-solving methods and other lifelong skills while having fun in the process.

The fifth grade team, who call themselves the Energetic Engineers, had a remarkable finish for their first year competing in the program.  To everyone’s amazement, they finished fifth in the state!  They competed against 16 other teams on Saturday and were recognized at the closing awards ceremony.  Their creativity, teamwork, and enthusiasm show what this program is all about!  The team was also invited to perform for Glebe Street students at their April Morning Program before heading to competition this past weekend.

Students who are interested in joining the program next year should watch for information to come out in September.  This enrichment program is currently offered at Warren Street and Knox Junior High.  As the program develops, the plan is to expand to other buildings in our district as well.  Parents are encouraged to check out the program and consider volunteering as a coach.  For more information please watch the following YouTube video: http://youtu.be/cWHP64kUhWc
