Solby Selected for NYSBDA Honor Concert Band

The GJSD Music Department is proud to announce the selection of Ciara Solby to the New York State School Band Directors Association (NYSBDA) High School Honor Concert Band. This highly selective group will rehearse during the 34th Annual NYSBDA Symposium in Syracuse, NY from March 6-8, culminating in a concert on March 8th.

Ciara was selected based on her audition at the Spring NYSSMA solo festival held in Cohoes last May. A clarinet player since fifth grade, she performed Mozart’s Concerto for Clarinet, scales, and a sight-reading exercise all at Level VI, the most challenging level of performance.

According to NYSBDA, almost 400 students from 85 school districts across New York State applied for the Honor Band. From these applications, approximately 100 students are selected to participate in the Honor Band.

Andy LaCoppola, her band teacher at JHS, credits Ciara’s outstanding work ethic, musicianship, and dedication for her success. Ciara studies privately with Stephanie Boice, of Boice’s Woodwind Studio in Hagaman, where she also performs with the Clarinet Choir and the Mixed Woodwind Ensemble.

Ciara performs regularly as a member of the Empire State Youth Wind Orchestra in Albany and the Gloversville Community Winds. Last summer, she played with the Gloversville Civic Band, attended the Crane School of Music Youth Summer Camp in Potsdam, and was selected as an alternate for the NYS Summer School of the Arts. This past November, Ciara was selected for the NYSSMA Zone 7 Area All State Band in Saratoga Springs. This coming summer, she will be touring Europe with the American Music Abroad Honor Band, a select group consisting of high school musicians from across the United States.

Ciara is the daughter of Richard and Stacey Solby of Johnstown.
